In 1897, George Maggs, a Batley solicitor, began to rent Oakwell Hall. It became a family home once again. Maggs and his wife, Lavinia Cooke, were tenants at Oakwell Hall from 1897 to 1913. During their residence, the hall was furnished in a 'baronial' style, featuring antlers and stag heads, reflecting the couple's taste and the hall's role as a family home rather than a public institution.
George served as a Major in the 4th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry during World War I. After the war, he and Lavinia moved to Dorset, where he passed away in 1945. Their tenure at Oakwell Hall marked a period of private occupancy before the building's transition into public ownership.
