This resource focuses on the role of the Victorian Servant at Shibden Hall, Halifax.
KS2 History: Local history study.
KS3 History: Society, economy and culture.
- By using this resource younger pupils will understand the range of household duties carried out by Victorian Servants and how household chores and the equipment used differ from those today.
- In addition older pupils will have learnt how a document such as a census can help us research and make links to the past. (Census returns of 1871, 1881 and 1891 can be downloaded from the Downloads page ).
Shibden Hall offers schools the opportunity to visit and experience life as a Victorian servant in two interactive workshops,
Dollies and Dusters and
Upstairs Downstairs. The resource can be used by teachers to support a visit or as an introduction to exploring the life of the Victorian servant in the classroom.
