M&S Penny Bazaars were an innovative high street presence, inviting customers to come in to browse and to inspect the goods on open display, unlike most other shops where the goods were held behind the counter. The fixed 'price point' -
everything for a penny
- was also a fresh approach, allowing customers a wide range of goods at an affordable price. The pictures show the Portsmouth Penny Bazaar in 1927 and some examples of goods that were sold for a penny.
