Careers in Museums and Galleries

How Do I Know What Role is Right for Me?

There isn't one perfect job role for everyone. We all enjoy different things, learn in different ways and have different strengths. One of the best ways to discover what might suit you is to learn about the different jobs people do and think about what those roles involve.

At Leeds Museums and Galleries, people work in many different roles. Some care for museum collections or historic buildings, others research objects, create exhibitions, teach school groups, design digital resources, organise events, welcome visitors or look after the museums behind the scenes. Although they all work for the same organisation, no two job roles are exactly alike.

Every role requires a different combination of knowledge, skills and personal qualities. Knowledge is what you learn through education, training and experience. Skills are the things you can do, such as using technology, writing clearly, taking photographs, solving problems or making something with your hands. Personal qualities are equally important. Being curious, organised, creative, patient, friendly or a good team player can all help someone succeed in different job roles.

Remember that no one starts their first job knowing everything. The people featured in this resource have all built their knowledge and skills over time through school, hobbies, volunteering, further study and work experience. Many have also discovered new interests along the way or taken unexpected routes into their current role.

As you read each staff profile, think about the person behind the job. What do they enjoy most about their work? What skills do they use every day? Which subjects, hobbies or experiences may have helped them get there? Do any of their interests or strengths sound similar to yours?

You might enjoy being creative, solving problems, using technology, learning about history, working with people or making things. Even if you have never considered working in a museum before, you may find there is a job role that matches your own interests and strengths.
