Toys Through Time

Teachers' notes

The Toys Through Time resource will be of use to those studying the following QCA Units:

KS1 History

Unit 1 'How are our toys different from those in the past?'

KS1 Science

Unit 1C 'Pushes and pulls'

Unit 1E 'Sorting and using materials'.

It focuses on old and new toys, how toys move, and the materials from which they are made. There is a quiz at the end which can be used to reinforce what the children have learned.

The photographs above show some of the toys used in the Toys Through Time Workshop and in York Castle Museum's galleries.

York Castle Museum has a wealth of toys. If you visit the Museum you can wander into the Toyshop on Kirkgate (the Museum's Victorian street) and walk through the Toy Gallery with its doll's houses, clockwork toys and constructional toys to name but a few!

If you would like to book the Education Workshop, Toys Through Time, which is suitable for KS1 students, please contact the Museum's Learning Assistant on 01904 650333 01904 650333 .

There is another resource called Toys from the Past if you would like to see more about this topic.
