Princess Sita mask, India, 1982

Princess Sita mask, India, 1982. Sita is the heroine of the sacred Hindu epic, the Ramayana. The demon Ravanna steals her away from her husband Rama and takes her to the island of Lanka. Rama comes to rescue her with the help of the monkey king Hanuman. Here she wears a high domed crown and has the sacred tikka mark in the middle of her forehead. © Leeds Museums and Galleries
