Store design refers to how new or modernised shops are laid out and how the space is used, including the design for all the walls, floors, ceilings and lighting that make the store enjoyable for customers to use. M&S stores are carefully designed to be easy to shop using clear navigation and moments of inspiration, surprise and delight!
The aim of M&S store design is to combine “the soul of a fresh market, with the mind of a supermarket”.
This is achieved by using wide walkways, bright lighting, interesting displays, interactive elements and bold signage that divides the store into clear sections like Frozen, Café, Kidswear, Bakery. Fresh fruit and vegetables are displayed at the entrance of M&S Foodhalls giving a welcoming feel. Some M&S stores have interactive Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar features and there’s even been a Percy Pig pop-up shop!
The colours, music, and even smells are chosen to create a pleasant atmosphere. M&S also thinks about accessibility, making sure aisles are wide enough for wheelchairs and prams.
Good store design helps customers feel comfortable, find what they need, and want to come back again – and therefore helps the store sell more products.
