Romans marching

The burial of these objects may have taken place at the time of the Roman invasion when Rome sent thousands of soldiers to take control of Britain. The coins were found in shallow pits inside a large enclosure ditch. This could suggest that the Iron Age tribes were not trying to hide the treasures from Roman soldiers. Were they instead ‘sacrificing’ the precious objects, perhaps to ask the gods for help during a time of great change? © Harborough Museum
