WW1 Land Girl Slashing Hedges, near Leeds

This photograph, taken during the First World War, shows a young woman slashing hedges in a field at Manor Farm, near Garforth in Leeds. Her heads is protected by a bonnets she wears a full-length overall for the task. She may have been enrolled on a course to gain practical farming skills. These two-week courses for women were run during the First World War to train women to take over jobs in agriculture as more and more men left to join the armed forces.
