Lice

Audio dramatisation adapted from the memoirs of POW, Phylactis Aristokleous.

"We had to work on getting rid of the lice, which multiplied in unimaginable numbers. The Cypriots knew how to exterminate some lice and nits as best they could, while the English would shout, "Look at it!" and throw the lice on the ground. We were ordered to remove all our clothing, which was disinfected in a special chamber. We were marched barefoot through the city of Corinth to the beach for a sea bath and to sterilize the hairy areas of our bodies—armpits, chest, etc.

As we approached the beach, a Cypriot soldier attempted to pick fresh broad beans from a nearby field. One of the accompanying guards shot him dead.  "
