Coronation Tapestry, 1953

A small black and white tapestry that commemorates the coronation of Elizabeth II, in 1953.

The tapestry depicts the queen being crowned and has the inscriptions; 'Coronation 1953' and 'Long Live The Queen'. According to an accompanying label, the tapestry was designed, woven, and presented by Mr Barry Rhodes (who was aged 17 years at the time), of Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury. It was woven in the Textile Department of the Dewsbury and Batley Technical and Art College and it was awarded first prize 'for jacquard styles' in the Bradford Textile Society's competition in 1953.
