A view of Saltaire, pre-1857. Titus Salt wanted to provide his workers with a pleasant and healthy environment in which to live and work and so chose to build his village on the outskirts of Bradford in the Aire Valley. Work began on the mill in 1851. The village was completed in 1876. This early illustration shows the mill and some of the first group of houses already complete
