Pigeons
Audio dramatisation adapted from the memoirs of POW, Phylactis Aristokleous.
"Another prisoner kept a pair of pigeons. The pigeons built their nest on a roof, and both the male and female took turns incubating the eggs. However, when it was the male's turn to incubate, another female pigeon would come and sit on the eggs- with the male's approval. When, after a certain period of time, the real mother pigeon returned and realized that another female pigeon was sitting on the eggs, chosen by the “unfaithful husband”, what followed was quite a spectacle! A wild fight would break out between the mother pigeon and the new “girlfriend” of the male pigeon. This scene caused the prisoners to burst into laughter. So, it seems even birds face similar problems, in domestic situations, just like humans do. "
