Hero

Audio dramatisation adapted from the memoirs of POW, Phylactis Aristokleous.

"After a while, I left the kitchen in search of Sergeant Hoskins. I found him lying in a corner of the building, in poor shape. I gave him 4-5 hardtacks, expecting nothing in return. Hoskins didn’t expect this at all. With eyes wide open and a flushed face, not knowing how to thank me, he said “You are a hero!” Some heroism! Offering a few hardtacks, which I sort of taken from the rations of the men I represented—for exactly that reason, I prayed and asked for forgiveness for my act, which was a genuine offence and against my conscience. "
