M&S Birth of a Brand - Campaign Case Study - 125 Anniversary

Celebrating 125 years of M&S

In 2009 M&S celebrated its 125th anniversary. For three days in May, M&S stores across the country hosted Original Penny Bazaar stalls. The stalls sold specially designed M&S products for just one penny each! You could buy jewellery, scarves, cufflinks, ties and socks; leather passport holders and luggage tags; tea towels, mugs and bags of retro sweets.

Every penny went to the M&S 125 Charity Challenge, which raised 1.25m for local and regional charities.

M&S are rightly very proud of their history as you can see from the advertising campaign that ran alongside the 125 celebrations.

Download the M&S Advertising and Branding timeline, which lists key dates and events in the Company's history and various advertising campaigns up to present day.

The discussion and activity ideas page makes suggestions for how these resources can be used in the classroom or given to students as homework assignments or extension activities.

Retro - style that refers to fashions or design trends from the past
