About the Liddle Collection

The Liddle Collection is an unparalleled research resource for the First World War.
 
It preserves the memory of over 4000 people, giving insight into the wartime experience of a diverse range of individuals including children, refugees and conscientious objectors, in addition to a large portion of material from ex-servicemen and women.
 
The collection includes original letters and diaries, poetry and recollections of wartime as well as photograph albums and original art works such as cartoons, paintings, sketches and embroidery.
 
The papers of serving soldiers span the various fronts where fighting was concentrated during the conflict, from East Africa to Russia and include the experiences of soldiers, sailors and airmen of multiple nationalities as well as medical personnel. The collection documents many different aspects of the conflict in a variety of formal and informal ways.
