1930s Visual Merchandising

Like all M&S operations, the development of the food business came from very humble beginnings. Early records show that some basic foods were sold on the market stalls, such as flour and spices. However, by the mid 1920s a range of slab cakes, loose biscuits and confectionery was available, and ice-cream counters were established in some stores.

In 1934, the range of food available was expanded, with the introduction of 'provisions' and a wider range of canned goods. These were displayed in elaborate window arrangements to attract the attention of passing customers.
