Spindle Whorl from the West Yorkshire Hoard

The spindle whorl is a very unusual find in a hoard since it is a practical item, not a piece of jewellery. It would have been used in the spinning process and shows us that material was being made in the Leeds area in the early medieval period. However, it’s not clear why this everyday object was buried next to such valuable jewellery.
