Txt Manor: Mary Queen of Scots in Sheffield

George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury (1522 - 1590)

George was the owner of both Sheffield Manor Lodge and Sheffield Castle. He was the richest nobleman in Northern England. It was George who transformed Manor Lodge into one of the finest Tudor buildings in England.

He married Elizabeth Hardwick (Bess of Hardwick) in 1567 and was pleased to be assigned Mary's custodian in 1569 by Elizabeth I. In 1572 he became Earl Marshall of England after the Duke of Norfolk was executed. He saw this as a mark of the Queen’s favour and a career-boosting honour. Soon however, he realised that it was very expensive keeping Mary and her entourage of more than thirty servants in a manner appropriate for a queen. George died an unhappy man in 1590, as his task of guarding Mary cost him his career, his wealth, his wife and his health.
