Surrealist Art: Objects and Meanings

Introduction

Surrealism is a popular movement with pupils and adults alike for its playful mixture of objects and images in unexpected situations and its shock tactics. This resource has been written to support pupils study of Surrealism but it encourages a focus on British artists and indicates the ongoing influence Surrealism has on British art.

The Ferens Art Gallery has an excellent collection which features many works with a surrealist element and also offers led sessions which examine objects and their meanings. This Learning Journey features four works which have been chosen to illustrate the diversity of the gallery collection, and the ways in which Surrealism was both adopted and adapted by British artists.
