Snapshot 1900: The Changing Picture of Class
The Men of Bedale Bowling Green Society
In the front row of the photograph is G Anderson (All England Cricketer). You can find out a few details about him from the 'Cricinfo' website ( see Related Links at bottom of page), such as dates of birth and death.Once you have these details you should then be able to go into the 'Family Search' website to find out about his 'day job' and also details about his family - you should find a George Anderson aged 55 in 1881 who lived in Aiskew Bedale. This links in with the details you got from the cricinfo site. How can you be sure this is the same man?
See if you can find two other men in the photograph on the 'Family Search' website: J Wheldon – Draper, and then try J W W Trewhitt. If you can’t find these people on this site try making a guess at their first names – John, or James.
If you still can’t find them then try the 1890 Trade Directory of Bedale (the Yellow Pages of the 19th Century!) which you can access on the 'Genuki' website ( see Related Link below).
Look at the photograph of Wheldon’s shop in Bedale. What do you think is the approximate date of the photo? Which of James Wheldon’s children is most likely to be in the photo? What are your reasons for your choice?
