About this resource

KS3 History, Unit 12: 'What was British middle-class life like?'

This unit focuses on the British middle class and provides pupils with experience in interrogating and cross-referencing different types of nineteenth-century source material . The material within this resource includes images and documents from the collections of North Yorkshire County Record Office and a small volunteer run museum at Bedale.

It uses material relating to the market town of Bedale to build up a picture of the complexity of middle-class life: housing, occupations, income, expenditure, civic pride and leisure pursuits. It can be used to support the study of Britain 1750–1900 more generally.

The resource also builds upon, links to and complements the following schemes of work:

History Unit 11 - Industrial changes

History Unit 14 - The British Empire

Art and Design Unit 9C - Personal places, public spaces

Geography Unit 9 - Shopping – past, present and future
