Scold's Bridle - justice for women 400 years ago?

A Scolds Bridle would be used on women approximately 300 years ago between the years 1567 and 1856. It was used in England and the Colonies as a punishment for 'Riotous or troublesome behaviour'. The bridle was clamped over the head and inserted into the mouth. The intended punishment was for the wearer not to be able to speak Galleries of Justice
