History comes alive with 'Murder at the Graves'!

From 6 March to 31 May 2008, a brand new murder mystery trail created by young people from Tapton School and Wybourne Youth Trust will lead you from the Central Library foyer to the Graves Art Gallery as part of a classic whodunit – follow the trail and find the clues!

The mystery marks the arrival of three new loans from the National Portrait Gallery, comprising paintings of Mary Beale, Nell Gwyn and Samuel Pepys, who famously chronicled Lady Denham’s demise in his celebrated diary. The paintings will go on display alongside Peter Lely’s Margaret Brooke, Lady Denham, and other portraits from Sheffield City’s visual art collection.

As well as investigating Lady Denham’s untimely death, the students from Tapton School and Wybourne Youth Trust have also been bringing historical characters back to life: working with artist Mary Sewell and photographer Carl Rose, they have produced photographic recreations of the portraits which feature themselves as the sitter. These new portraits form part of a brand new portraiture portfolio, which acts as a guide for visitors to the gallery on how to ‘read’ some of the different attributes used in portraiture. It also explores the lives of the original sitters and records the process the young people went through to recreate the paintings.

Pieces of History Set to Roll Back to Harewood House!

The East Bedroom, redecorated with exquisite hand-painted ‘mobile’ Chinese wallpaper dating back to the 1760s, will provide a dazzling centrepiece to the ‘China at Harewood’ exhibition.

The Chinese wallpaper, depicting scenes of Chinese life, was ‘lost’ for 150 years until 1988, when around twenty rolls were rediscovered in a carpenter’s loft in one of the outbuildings on the Harewood Estate. Subsequent research has shown that the rolls form a completed scheme thought likely to have been commissioned by Edwin Lascelles and installed in 1769 in the Chintz Bedroom as part of the decoration of the then newly built Harewood House. In the mid 1990s the rolls of wallpaper were conserved to a level that would allow them to be stored for future use. Restoration work on the wallpaper has been carried out in Gloucestershire by the country’s foremost historic wallpaper conservator Allyson McDermott, who has said that in her opinion: “It is one of the best examples of Chinese wallpaper in the world. The colours are wonderful and the quality of painting extraordinary. What Harewood has is something wonderful and unique”.

For Harewood House Trust, Curator of Decorative Arts, Melissa Gallimore commented; “It is wonderfully exciting that this unique Chinese wallpaper will be hung at Harewood for everyone to see after being lost for so many years and will be available for the public to view from March 2008”.

The East Bedroom currently displays the suite of Chinese-style japanned furniture supplied by Thomas Chippendale to accompany this wallpaper. The suite will be retained in the room and be reunited with the wallpaper that it originally complemented.

The conservation and re-hanging of the wallpaper has been made possible by a grant of £83,300, jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation, with further financial support being provided by the Esmeé Fairbairn Foundation with a grant of £38,900.

Footnote: As the Chintz Bedroom is not available to the visiting public and the decorative scheme is of historic interest in its own right, the East Bedroom has been chosen as a suitable site as the paper can be easily configured to fit the room.

The museum's hugely popular and award winning session - which helped towards its recent second Sandford Award for education provision - has been adapted so it can be taken out to schools while the museum is closed.

Pupils at St Luke's First School, in Cleckheaton, were among some of the first pupils to experience the session in which children get the chance to handle Ancient Egyptian objects, make an Egyptian style necklace and watch one of their classmates being partially mummified!

"We didn't want school children to miss out on Bagshaw's excellent and thoroughly fun session on Ancient Egypt. So, if schools can't come to us while the museum is closed, we will go to the schools," commented Cllr Liz Smaje, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Leisure and Neighbourhood Services.

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is delighted to announce an exciting programme of videoconferencing workshops made possible by a grant of £8,500 from the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), awarded earlier this year.

Two workshops are available for primary schools; In the ‘Meet a real Miner’ workshop, pupils are given the opportunity to hear about a typical ‘day in the life’ of a miner and ask the miner questions about his experiences underground. The second workshop, ‘Stories of a Bevin Boy’ introduces pupils to coal mining’s contribution to World War Two through the recollections of ‘Jeff’, who was conscripted to work in the mines during the war.

These curriculum-linked sessions are interactive, engaging and most importantly, free! Videoconferencing sessions are available on Mondays and Thursdays at 9.30am and 2.30pm and will run throughout the academic year.

For more information on videoconferencing, or to make a booking for your school, please call the Museum’s Education Officer, Jayne Ambrose, on 01924 848806. To take part schools need to be registered with JANET videoconferencing services.

It’s week 4 of Family Summer Fun at the National Coal Mining Museum. As we enter mid-August the fun is staying outside and there’s an opportunity for young nature enthusiasts to be at one with nature by decorating a plant pot, in which they will be able to grow their own plant and watch it grow!

If that’s not enough excitement for you, you can take in a living history performance by Mrs Lockwood, a wartime miner’s wife; and Fred will be on hand in the Pithead Baths to give you an invaluable insight into the weird and wonderful life of a miner.

Children love the chance to accompany an ex-miner on an underground tour, where they don a hard hat and lamp and travel 140 metres down one of Britain’s oldest working mines and learn about the history of mining and the role young children used to play in the pit.

There is so much to do for free at the National Coal Mining Museum this summer, so make sure you pay a visit!

Part-time MA in Education with ESD Focus – with bursaries available for teachers

The University of York are currently recruiting practising teachers and others involved in sustainable schools / Education for Sustainable Development onto their part-time MA in Education. This takes place over two years and is aimed at busy practitioners who are DOING something around the area of SUSTAINABILITY or SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS and who want to investigate more deeply into, and reflect upon, their practice – and get a HIGHER DEGREE at the same time.
Primary, secondary and FE teachers are all most welcome!

The course will start at 6.30 p.m. on 9th October with the first of eight taught sessions which form a module on RESEARCH METHODS in EDUCATION. Subsequent sessions will be organised in the light of wishes and needs of the participants. The group will also continue to meet as necessary over four terms so that participants can discuss their investigations and provide support for each other.

BURSARIES from the TDA covering about 45% of the course fee of c.£1650 p.a. are available to all qualified teachers whether they are practising or not.

The idea behind the course is that together a supportive community of reflective-practitioners is created, with the University of York providing academic under-pinning to ensure that individual investigations meet the rigorous standards of a Masters degree. The ten people in the first cohort (that started in October 2006) have topics that vary from how a large comprehensive school is addressing the 8 Doorways of the DfES Sustainable Schools Framework to how an individual teacher can develop sustainability as a ‘frame of mind’ in her infant class, or how learning in more sustainable buildings can affect pupils’ understanding of sustainable development.

The National Coal Mining Museum will be
pleased to hear from anyone who may have rescued objects from the Caphouse mineral railway or who have photographs that they would be prepared to loan or donate to the Museum for a new exhibition Coals to Calder Grove, due to open on 15 October.

Based around the story of the Caphouse mineral railway, much of the research for the exhibition was originally carried out by local historians, who spoke with workers on the line. The Museum will be pleased to hear from people with memories of the Caphouse mineral railway or those who worked on it.

Coal from Caphouse Colliery, and other collieries owned by the Lister Kaye family, had to be delivered to customers throughout Yorkshire and beyond. The key element in this transportation was the mineral railway, which was constructed in the early 1850s, and for almost 100 years linked the collieries with the canal and mainline railway network.

Coals to Calder Grove will explore the history of this small but fascinating railway. The special exhibition will examine why the railway was needed, how it was constructed and operated and what remains of it almost sixty years on.

Meet the Yorkshire Miner in Minehead!

The National Coal Mining Museum for England has recently been awarded a grant of £8,500 to fund a video conferencing facility. The grant was awarded to the museum following a joint bid between Jayne Ambrose, the Museum’s Education Officer, Paul Butler of Wakefield Metropolitan Council and Andrew Lickley of the Yorkshire and Humber Grid for Learning Foundation.

The grant was awarded by MLA (Museums, Libraries & Archives) and will be spent on equipment, training and consultancy. Video conferencing will enable the museum to expand its outreach programme on a national level and to reach learners who may find it difficult to get to the museum or access its resources.

During the first phase of the project the museum is targeting primary schools with two specially designed workshops, ‘Meet the Miner’, where pupils are given the opportunity to hear about a typical ‘day in the life’ of a miner and ask the miner questions about his experiences underground. The second workshop is ‘Stories from a Bevin Boy’ during which pupils learn about coal mining’s contribution to WWII through the recollections of a Bevin Boy.

Video conferencing has proved to be extremely popular so far with Bolton Brow Junior School, Oyster Park Junior School and Kiverton Park Meadows Junior School already having taken advantage of the Museum’s new interactive activities.

For more information on video conferencing or to book your school in please call the Museums’ Education Officer, Jayne Ambrose on 01924 848806.

Video conferencing sessions take place at 9:00am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Sessions need to be booked at least 72 hours in advance.

China comes to Yorkshire

These intricate children’s shoes are just one of the items from the Leeds Museums & Galleries Chinese collection that may go on show to mark the start of the Cultural Olympiad in 2008.

External funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council England (Yorkshire) is enabling the Yorkshire Hub to deliver China in Yorkshire, a significant project to uncover Chinese treasures held in the region and to make them widely accessible through the development of localised exhibitions. Chinese artists will also be commissioned to provide contemporary responses to the exhibitions taking place in Sheffield and Bradford.

The regional museums services in Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and York are working in partnership to develop the project. One of the key activities is a community engagement programme with local community groups. Their involvement will be as co-curators for the exhibitions, choosing items to display and assisting with interpretation.

A wider partnership with other museums in the region is also in development. Areas such as regional branding, staff training and development, learning resources and loans are just some of the areas of collaboration already identified.

Nick Dodd, chief executive of Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust, is excited about the possibilities of the project, “China in Yorkshire is a perfect project for us. It starts with a nationally important objective - to celebrate the Olympiad – and creates a relevant, timely and inspirational partnership allowing curators to work with the community, the community to engage with the collections and endowing the collections with new perspectives and a renewed cultural life within the region and internationally.”

Inspirational Key Stage 2 and/or Key Stage 3 teachers to develop online KS2 or KS3 Citizenship resource for Sheffield schools between now and March 2007. The new resource will explore the values of Victorian Sheffield, looking at education, attitudes to crime and punishment, health and environment, local democracy, community diversity and the movement of people.

We are looking for creative teachers to work with Sheffield Archives and Sheffield Local Studies Library to develop a challenging Key Stage 2 Citizenship e-learning resource to be published on My Learning. You will spend up to ten half days on the project. Your time is funded by the
Museums and Archives Alive for schools Strategic Commissioning

There will be opportunities for pupils to debate issues and to role play so as to understand how decisions were made in the past, and to make connections with issues for today and the future.

The project offers opportunities to work with staff at Sheffield Archives, Sheffield Local Studies Library and their project partners - Kelham Island Industrial Museum, the Victorian Classroom Experience and a creative writing workshop leader. You need to be able to offer limited CPD opportunities to project partnership staff to see how archive resources can be used in the classroom.

Young learners will work alongside us, influencing decisions that will determine the direction of a unique local history/citizenship e-learning resource. This in itself is a hugely enriching introduction to Citizenship and in line with Every Child Matters.

	The offer

Sheffield Archives and Sheffield Local Studies Library are offering teacher placements to help prepare an interactive educational resource between now and March 2007.
develop and pilot lesson plans using the selected images

participate in professional development activities for themselves and for other project partners.

The project will encourage professional development for teaching, archive, library and museum staff by arranging shadowing sessions, including some in school classrooms. The project will also involve specialist staff to develop ways to use the material through role-play and creative writing.

The project will be made available on CD-Rom and on the My Learning website.

There is funding to pay for cover for teachers’ time out of the classroom or to pay teachers directly for time outside school hours as well as reasonable expenses involved in professional development activities.

Irna Qureshi looks at decorated trucks along the Grand Trunk Road

In March 2006, writer Irna Qureshi and photographer Tim Smith travelled along the longest, oldest and most famous highway in the Indian sub-continent. The purpose of the trip was to compile an exhibition about the Grand Trunk Road, which stretches 1,500 miles from Kabul in Afghanistan, into Pakistan, and on to Calcutta in India. Their journey along the Grand Trunk Road took them from Delhi in India to the Khyber Pass on the Pakistan/Afghan border. Irna and Tim were particularly interested in this stretch of the ‘GT Road’ because most Hindus and Sikhs from North India, as well as Pakistanis who now live in Britain have their roots dotted along this part of the GT Road. They explored the history of this famous road and why it is that so many people with links to this route have made Britain their home.

An exhibition of this journey, called The Grand Trunk Road – From Delhi to the Khyber Pass, featuring photographs and extracts from oral history interviews, can be seen at the

Weather Funding Success for Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust

Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust has been awarded two grants to support a touring exhibition in partnership with Croydon Museum and Heritage Service, and Tyne & Wear Museums.

Whatever the Weather is the only museum project so far to have been successful in its £97,000 application to DEFRA’s Climate Challenge Fund. The Heritage Lottery Fund has also awarded £49,250 from its Your Heritage fund to support the exhibition.

Dr Fiona Spiers, Regional Manager of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said;
We all love to talk about the weather! This fantastic project will really help the local community to explore their relationship with this element of our natural heritage. HLF is dedicated to supporting projects that open up our heritage for locals and visitors to learn about and enjoy.

Whatever the Weather will be the first major touring exhibition to be on show at Sheffield’s newly redeveloped Weston Park Museum in the summer of 2007. It will then tour nationally to the Museum of Croydon and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens during 2007 and 2008.

Whatever the Weather will demonstrate that weather and climate has been important to all cultures and all life on Earth from the dawn of time to the present day and that our weather patterns and climate zones are part of a dynamic, ever-changing system that is in delicate balance, easily thrown into chaos by what we do. It will highlight how simple, small steps can cumulatively create positive change. Weather records have been collected at Weston Park Weather Station since 1882. This weather station and the 120 years of records that it has generated will be used in the creation of the exhibition.
