Preston: Past and Present

What can pictures tell us about rich and poor people?

In groups, look at one of these pictures in detail. They were all taken in Preston in the past. How do we know this?

Think about these questions:

  • What words could we use to describe the people in your picture?
  • What can we learn about the people, just from the picture?
  • Which objects in the picture give us clues?
  • What are the people doing?
  • What are they wearing?
  • Are they wealthy or working people? Why do you think that?

There are some things about the people that we cannot tell from these pictures alone.

What else would we like to know about them? Can you write your own questions that you would like to ask? Complete Worksheet 10.

Imagine that you are one of the people in the pictures.

Which person have you chosen?

Use your imagination to answer the questions on Worksheet 11.

You will need to imagine things like...

  • Your name and age
  • Your job
  • You home

You will also need to think about...

  • How you feel about the other people in the picture
  • If you are enjoying what you are doing in the picture
  • If you like your job
  • How you feel about having your photograph taken!

As a class, take it in turns to be interviewed as your character.
