Description:

Thwaite Mills is a working water-powered mill with two huge waterwheels driving inter-linked cogs and grinding wheels, which were used to crush stone for items such as paint and putty from 1872 to 1976. Situated on an island between the River Aire and the Aire and Calder Navigation, Thwaite Mills was the hub of a tiny island community with cottages, crops and gardens. Now the island is a wildlife haven only minutes away from the city. The site also explains the history of the mill from the 17th century until the 1970s. Thwaite Mills also features the Georgian Mill Managers House which tells the story of the Horn Family who owned the mill for generations.
