Description:
Red House is the delightful former home of woollen cloth manufacturers, the Taylor family.
The period rooms portray the domestic life in a middle-class family home of the mid-1830s. Charlotte Brontė was a family friend who often visited Red House and described the house and family in her novel Shirley.
'The Secret's Out' gallery explores Charlotte Brontė's connection with the Spen Valley and her friendship with local women Mary Taylor and Ellen Nussey. Discover how they reacted to society's strict view of 'a woman's place' in the 19th century and see rare artefacts relating to Victorian women and girls.
The 'Spen Valley Stories exhibition in the restored cartsheds explores aspects of Spen Valley life over the last 100 years including schooldays, work, shopping and leisure time.
