Description:
The National Stone Centre is based on a dramatic, 50-acre site near Matlock in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales.

The guided trail helps school groups to explore the fascinating story of the limestone rocks by looking at the fossil evidence for creatures that lived in a tropical sea 330 million years ago. Activities are available on site to tie in with National Curriculum requirements in many subject areas. An indoor exhibition tells the Story of Stone from its formation to uses in modern technology. We can also arrange a visit to observe a working quarry.

Learning Programmes:

The National Stone Centre offers a varied programme to support school visits.  Students can take part in a number of different activities.

Schools can select from these activities according to their curriculum needs and the time they have available. The content can be varied to suit all age ranges and ability levels from pre-school to adult.  Activities include Fossil casting, Gem panning, Rocks and Minerals, Soils, Fossil rubbing, Quarry visit, Millennium Wall. Schools can take part in one of our 'Treasure in the Rocks' day events when students can sample several of the activities – these are usually held on Wednesdays but other weekdays may be possible by prior arrangement.
