No trip to York is complete without a visit to the world’s greatest railway museum. Meet railway stars from Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive, to our replica of Stephenson’s pioneering Rocket. Enter the world of high speed travel with the Japanese bullet train, and explore our Warehouse packed full of thousands of railway treasures.


Enjoy our daily programme of talks, tours, demonstrations, and vehicle and cab access. You can also soak up the atmosphere of Station Hall, where you can experience the sights and sounds of a station from the past, and discover the luxury of the majestic Royal carriages – from Queen Victoria’s lavish ‘palace on wheels’ to King George VI’s wartime saloon.

Learning Programmes:

Our FREE sessions offer a variety of science shows, workshops and trails within the museum. These link directly to the National Curriculum and

encourage cross-curricular learning with emphasis on science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) and spiritual, moral, social & cultural development (SMSC).


Key Stage 1 Workshops

• First World War Ambulance Trains – visit our ambulance train carriage

installation, participate in our theatre experience, enjoy our interactive

• Mallard, the world’s fastest steam engine – an interactive, multi-sensory

story told through objects that you can feel, hear and smell


Also to compliment your visit download our FREE Great Object Hunts. Several treasure hunts designed for Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 3 students to encourage creativity, observation and discussion through the museum.



Specialisms:

The Collection comprises over a hundred locomotives dating from 1813 up to the present day. These represent the progress and innovations of the rail industry and its products. The collection also compliments the varied Learning Programme for KS2 and KS3, step onboard to discover more.
