Description:
By Norman times, Lincoln was the third city of the realm in prosperity and importance. The city even had its own mint for making coins. In 1068, two years after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle on a site occupied since Roman times.
For 900 years Lincoln Castle has been used as a court and prison. In 1068 William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle which dominated Lincoln’s skyline until the Cathedral was built. Lincoln Castle is one of two castles in Britain built with two mottes and was the focus for several military battles.
Lincoln Castle is also the home of the Magna Carta. This 790 year old document is one of the four surviving originals sealed by King John. Many of the original features of Lincoln Castle remain and the wall walks provide magnificent views of the Cathedral, the City of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside.
