Description:
Located in an iconic purpose built building near the River Aire, Leeds Museum Discovery Centre houses objects from our reserve collections. Housed within an eye-catching building, museum artefacts are stored and cared for at this special storage facility.
Containing curiosities ranging from Leeds’ largest item, a full-sized yak, to collections of butterflies, albatrosses and the Leeds mummy, the Discovery Centre provides state-of-the-art facilities to care for old and delicate objects. The store uses various control mechanisms to keep museum objects in optimum condition. This means special measures such as temperature and light controls, as well as protection from insect pests, pollution and humidity.
Offering specialist advice from curators, and access to collections of geology, anthropology, archaeology, natural science and social history. The Discovery Centre is open to everyone to use its unique resources. Alongside conserving collections, the Discovery Centre provides learning and education facilities and events for school groups and parties.
Through the Renaissance Partnership initiative, Leeds Museums Discovery Centre has been working with Yorkshire Film Archive and Mojo Media to create a contemporary filmed history of the story of dance in Leeds. You can view one of the videos at: www.myyorkshire.org
