Description:
Dedicated to the magical theme of childhood, Dewsbury Museum
presents a child’s eye view on history.
The 'Growing Up in Dewsbury' exhibition looks back over a century of childhood experiences - a century filled not just with toys and games, but with the trials and tribulations of growing up in wartime, the excitement of going-out and of getting your first job. Rock and Roll, nights-out at the cinema and an Edwardian toy shop window help to complete the picture.
The first floor is home to 'Toys will be Toys', a brand new toy gallery where visitors can explore the technology behind toys, toy fads and fashions along with the secrets toys reveal about the generation they were created for.
A recreated 1940s classroom provides the setting for a trip back to school in war-torn Britain with dip-pens, stirrup-pumps, gas-masks and blackout blinds. This unusual facility provides a popular setting for roleplay and reminiscence work alike.
