Description:
The Museum is in the C17th house on Whitby's harbour where the young James Cook lodged as apprentice. It was here Captain Cook trained as a seaman, leading to his epic voyages of discovery

Risk assessment on request, dedicated education room, experienced education volunteers, introductory session, tour of the museum, place to leave bags, toilet facilities, wheelchair access to first floor, DVD guide to upper floors.


Learning Programmes:
KS1/4 introductions about Captain Cook and voyages of discovery. Topics include:trade and transportation, shipping, world geography, native cultures, diet, health and disease, and daily life in the C18th.  Art History - the museum has an impressive collection of original voyage art and botanical illustrations.
All visits can be adapted to suit the particular needs of the school or group. Optional hands-on activity sessions include 'Block and Tackle', Story-telling and artefact handling with Trevor's 'Treasure Chest'. 
New outreach programme for 2012 – 'Fish & Ships' cookery sessions at local schools. Discover the mysteries of naval food with our 'picnic hamper' of culinary curiosities brought directly to the classroom - authentic salt pork, ships biscuit, portable soup and lemon rob.  Practical cooking activities provoke an interest in food hygiene and healthy eating as we learn how to avoid the dreaded scurvy. A fun, interactive approach to studying History, with a broad cross-curricula appeal.

Captain Cook, C18th maritime history and exploration, Pacific cultures, Art and voyages, Food and diet in historic times. The museum has four floors of exhibits, the ground floor furnished as Cook would have known the house as an apprentice.
2012 exhibition 'Eating the Exotic! Food on a voyage to Polynesia' examines what sorts of foods were gathered, cultivated and eaten in the islands visited by Captain Cook, and what he and his companions thought about them.
