Master Cutler's Badge

This Master Cutler's badge was made in Sheffield in 1870 by Thomas Bradbury & Sons.

The gilt and enamel badge was worn by the Master Cutler, the head of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. The Master Cutler is a very important person within industry and is elected every three years. The Master has to be recognisable at official engagements and the badge is a symbol of the role.

When the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire was founded in 1624, they chose images of an elephant and crossed daggers for their coat of arms.
