Turtle Soup Tureen

This turtle soup tureen was made from Old Sheffield Plate around 200 years ago. It can hold up to six litres and was once used to serve soup made from green turtles imported from the West Indies.

Turtle soup and mock turtle soup were very popular in Victorian times.

'Mock turtle' soup was made out of calf's head and veal instead of turtle. It was viewed as delicacy and was very popular at banquets and special occasions.

Watch this animation to find out how the Turtle Soup Tureen was made.
