Metalwork Objects in Focus, Millennium Gallery, Sheffield

Buttons made from Old Sheffield Plate (c1750)

Buttons were the first item to be made from this material by Thomas Bolsover. These are the earliest known examples that survived and are decorated with hunting scenes.

Old Sheffield Plate buttons were die-stamped, often from dies originally used to make silver buttons. Plated examples could not stand the wear and tear of regular use and were usually made for dress uniforms rather than everyday clothes.
