M&S Making a Mark - Flora Solomon

The Forces Bulletin

The Forces Bulletin was sent to all M&S staff serving in the Forces - no matter where in the world they were! The first issue went out in January 1944, with 24 issues printed in total.

This edition includes answers to a questionnaire for female employees published by Flora Solomon. At the end of the War many people, especially women, were unsure if they would have a job to return to. These comments demonstrate the affection and gratitude employees felt towards M&S for the support from the Company during the war years. It also provides a fascinating snap-shot of the types of work undertaken by women in wartime.

This is a transcription of the responses to Flora Solomon's questionnaire in the Forces Bulletin.

A different questionnaire but completed by Flora's boss Simon Marks when he was 16.
