Bitter Sweet History - aspects of the British Slave Trade
Book a 'Bitter Sweet History' Workshop
To support the Unfair Trade exhibition at York Castle Museum the learning team have developed a new workshop for Key Stage 3 students.
The workshop has been developed in partnership with local teachers, students and the Centre for Global Education.
During the workshop pupils will investigate whether ordinary people were complicit in the British Slave Trade, and draw parallels with the world today. Students will handle museum objects relating to rum, tobacco, sugar, cocoa, coffee and cotton. All of these objects were used in Britain at the height of the British Slave Trade. Students will then handle objects related to the movement of slaves, including manacles and thumb restraints. Students are then asked to explore the issues relating to slavery and Fair Trade today by choosing a contemporary object which they feel relates to their theme.
The workshop lasts one hour and is suitable for 15 students. If your group is larger you may want to consider splitting into smaller groups - there is a self-guided trail which can be used around the museum by the rest of your students.
The workshop is charged at £2 per student, plus the usual museum admission charge.
