Activity 2: Exploring Baptism and Burial Registers

The family who owned Bedale Hall were called Beresford Peirse.  To find out more about the members of the family we can use the Baptism register from the parish church.  Examine the images of the two baptism entries and see what you can find out about Henry and Henrietta.

The Baptism entry is not a birth certificate, it is an  entry telling us when this person was baptised.  Most babies were not baptised on the day they were born, but would have been within a couple of months of their birth. How does this information limit the use of this document?

Now look at the Burial Register. What can this tell you about Henry Monson De la Poer Beresford Peirse? The Burial register only gives the date of burial it does not tell us the date of death or the cause of death.

What other documents are available to the general public to find out dates of birth and death?
