All Aboard! An example project.

The BTEC ND Fashion and Clothing students from Hull College, developed a fashion collection with a nautical theme. They began with a day’s drawing of primary sources at the Ferens Art Gallery and Hull’s Maritime Museum, paying particular attention to interesting shapes and details. They combined this with a visit to the Hull Marina and the docks, noting the architectural history of the city.

The Museums provided students with access to maritime suits from their collection, such as the P & O cruise wear, the Captain’s uniforms and Trinity House Sailor Suits, ranging from the late 1800’s to the 1920’s period. This was an invaluable experience, as the course brief indicates that the student should complete an accurate adapted pattern to include any necessary facings, lining patterns and construction details.
