Batten Down the Hatches!

Stuck in the ice… chasing the whales… finding the fish… How did sailors keep their sanity during long and arduous voyages? How were events recorded and documented?

At Hull's Maritime Museum, there are logbooks, and a diary of a doctor written on board a whaling vessel stranded in the Arctic. Separation from loved ones and perilous journeys were all part of life for men of the sea. Their fleets often had to fight the weather and sometimes polar bears, but still the men sometimes had the time to make unique works of art that will never be created again.
