Ideas and Evidence in Science: The Kirkdale Cave

Evidence A - diagrams and maps

Points for students to consider:

The diagram of the cave layout (right) shows some important aspects inside the cave, including the main cavern and the position of the location of an elephant’s tooth. Students may notice that the diagram, however, does not include measurements to indicate the size of the cave.

This map (right) shows the location of Kirkdale Cave and was taken from an original drawing in William Buckland’s account. It shows the main features of the surrounding areas.

Students may notice the rock types and the geographical location of the cave.  There is a close up image of the map bottom right.
