Hull Traders: Revolutionary Fabrics
Themes and Related Activities
Three ‘themes’ have been identified which can be investigated within the exhibition. These are:
Design Inspiration
Looking at observational drawings from nature and the landscape as inspiration for fabric designs
Pattern & Paint
Looking at the relationship between fabric design and painting, particularly Abstract Expressionism, Op Art and Pop Art.
Design goes Pop!
Looking at the ‘Swinging Sixties’ aesthetic and the use of colour, pattern and shape in the home, including fabrics and furniture.
There are ‘Teachers’ Notes’ accompanying each of these themes with activities which can be used or adapted by teachers to suit their pupils’ needs. Activities are designed to be undertaken during a visit to the exhibition or when looking at the images in class.
‘Teachers’ Notes’ also include suggestions for ‘extended project activity'. This is an outline of a project which can be delivered over approximately half a term linked to that particular theme.
Activities within the ‘Teachers’ Notes’ and extended project activities can be adapted to different Key Stages and abilities.
Teachers’ Notes can be downloaded from each of the sections covering the three themes.
