Silent
A Silent Film is a film with no spoken dialogue and most films were silent before the late 1920s.
It is often said that 'Pictures speak a thousand words', and the silent film communicated to a universal audience through action rather than dialogue.
Famous actors in silent films were Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. The silent Film era is sometimes referred to as the ' Age of the Silver Screen'.
Pianos were played in the cinemas to accompany the film. A piano can be seen in the replica 1930s Cinema at Armley Mills Industrial Museum in Leeds (see image right).
