Digital Storytelling - Recording, Equipment and Editing in Audacity

Setting up the equipment

Before you start recording, ensure the recorder and microphone have plenty of battery life and enough memory space to save a few takes of the full length of the recording.

  • Position the microphone about 18 inches away from the speaker, on a table or desk at waist height, angled at 45 degrees towards the speaker's mouth
  • Check that the microphone and recorder are both switched on
  • Whilst recording, try to make sure that the microphone lead does not rub on anything as this will cause interference on the recording.
  • The microphone should be on its stand, but if you have to hold the mic to make a recording, wrap the lead around your hand to try prevent too much interference and try to keep your fingers very still.
