Crime and Punishment - Sophia Constable

The Court

The Quarter Sessions Court

The Quarter Sessions Minute Book contains the dates of the Quarter Sessions Court and the names of the Justices of the Peace who sat for that session.

The Quarter Sessions were court sessions held four times a year in each County and County Borough, and were identified by the following titles - Epiphany, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas. The sessions were presided over by a Justice of the Peace.

The Quarter Session at which Sophia Constable’s case was heard was Epiphany 1873, which took place in January 1873 at the North Riding Court in Northallerton.

These 2 pages give details of the Justices of the Peace who sat for the session.  (You can download a transcription of these pages in Word, from the Worksheets section).

What does this information tell you about the people who were Justices of the Peace at this time?    Would this be the same for Justices of the Peace today?

Now read through the list of jurors and their occupations.

What does this information tell you about the people who were selected for jury service? How are jurors selected today?
