Contemporary Metalwork in Sheffield - Living Metal

What's in the Living Metal Display?

Hidden Histories

During the project we undertook Hidden History research visits to partners in the manufacturing community. We discovered a wealth of information about objects in the collection. Please take time to look at the "find out more folders" when you visit.

Trades and Occupations

The manufacture of goods for specific occupations has been a key part in Sheffield’s light metal industry for centuries. These objects are made in the City today for the catering industry and the emergency services.

For the Home

A vast range of objects for the home continue to be made in Sheffield. The industry’s reputation was built on quality cutlery and flatware.

Technology and Innovation

Sheffield has long been at the forefront in the developing new materials and manufacturing processes for the light metal industry. These objects use some of the most recent advances in these areas.

Community Project

The community drawer contains objects made by participants in the Living Metal community project. Alongside them are pieces from the collection that inspired their manufacture.
