Commissioning a Public Sculpture for Hull

The designs

On this page you can see three separate designs for the same brief.  Each silversmith interpreted the brief very differently. Some designs were also submitted with extra drawings and all had a written proposal. All three silversmiths were listed in the Goldsmiths' Company Directory.

You can read these proposals in the worksheets below

All of the designs and proposals were closely examined and discussed by a panel of experts in art, silver, slavery and community affairs.  Sheffield Assay office (a specialist local company) also advised.

The winning designer was Jocelyn Burton. The panel felt her design interpreted the brief in the best way for this commission. It was an original, forward looking design that also looked good in its own right.

However, the panel also requested some changes to Jocelyn's design. One change was for the shell to be static and not spinning on an axis, as her original design presented it.

Watch Jocelyn talk about about her design in a gallery of video interviews.
