Commission Impossible

The designs

On this page you can see three separate designs for the same brief.  Each silversmith interpreted the brief very differently.  Some designs were also submitted with extra drawings.  All designs were submitted with a written proposal.  All three silversmiths can be contacted through the Goldsmiths' Company Directory online.

 

You can read these proposals in the attached worksheets.

 

All of the designs and proposals were looked at by a panel.  This included experts in art, silver, slavery and community affairs.  Sheffield Assay office were also very helpful with their advice.

 

The winning design was by Jocelyn Burton.  The panel felt her design interpreted the brief in the best way for this commission.  It was an original, forward looking design that also looked good in its own right.  However, the panel also requested some changes.  One change was for the shell to be static and not spinning on its axis.
