Red 'Crane' Robe

A chinese red silk robe, embroidered with cranes, made circa 1880-1911.

This is a woman's robe of bright red silk, embroidered all over with cranes in satin stitch. The braid border has purple butterflies on a black ground. Cranes are a symbol of long life and wisdom in China.

This robe forms part of the collections at Leeds Museums and Galleries.
